Description | Habitat: Rich soils in woodlands, pond margins, streambanks, roadsides and old fields. Plant: Perennial with slender climbing or trailing stems 12 to 40 inches long that have sparse, fine hairs end becoming smoother with age. Leaves: Alternate even pinnately-compound leaves 3/4 to 3-1/8 inches long, even pinnately-compound,; tendrils present at leaf tip; 8 to 14 leaflets, narrowly oblong to narrowly elliptic or oblong-lanceolate, each 0.3 to 0.8 inches long and less than 0.1 to 0.3-inches wide; tips are obtuse or with a small tip (mucronate); smooth to finely hairy surfaces. Inflorescence: Racemes 2-3/8 to 4 inches long with 7 to 20 pea-like flowers; each flower 0.3 to 0.5 inches long; corollas white, sometimes tinged with pale lavender, keel with a bluish tip; short calyx usually finely hairy, 1.5-2.0 mm long, with unequal, triangular lobes.
