Lubbock Lake Landmark is just north of the city of Lubbock. It is considered to be an important archeological site and natural history preserve. The lake itself is long gone, having filled in by water and wind erosion, burying remnants of animals, flora, artifacts and humans back as far as 12,000 years ago.
The site is operated by Texas Tech University.
Like the rest of Texas, the severe heat this summer had taken its toll on the plant life, but the area was fortunate in having drought-reducing rains for several weeks before our visit in October. So, we found quite a few plants in bloom, including seven new species.
