Description | Habitat: Sandy or calcareous clay soils on flats, slopes, and outcrops in mixed grassland, creosote bush and mesquite communities, oak and conifer woodlands; 200 to 4300 ft. Plant: Tall, leafy perennial 3 to 6 ft. tall; single-stemmed at the base, becoming branched above; stems with pubescent hairs. Leaves: Basal leaves oblong to lanceolate or oblanceolate very short to 7 inches long and up to 1-inch wide; on petioles 1-1/2 to 4 inches long; stem leaves are smaller and sessile; blades are woolly-hairy beneath, upper surfaces the same or nearly smooth. Inflorescence: In about the upper third of the plant and along several branches that repeatedly fork, clusters of small flowers at ends of branch tips and in axils; each flower about 1/4-inch across or less and has a perianth deeply divided into 6 lanceolate to narrowly elliptic yellowish-green lobes with white, hairy edges; very hairy backsides; 6 protruding stamens with beige anthers and one pistil.
