Description | Habitat: Sandy or gravelly soils in oak and conifer woodlands and open areas. Plant: Tall, leafy annual (or biennial) 1-1/2 to 6-1/2 ft. tall; single-stemmed at the base, becoming branched above; stems with woolly hairs. Leaves: Blades are oblong to narrowly ovate, 0.6 to 1.6 inches long and 0.4 to 0.9 inches wide; edges are entire or somewhat undulate (wavy); somehat hairy upper surface, very hairy (woolly) lower surface; nearly sessile. Inflorescence: Flat–topped branching array up to to 8 inches across of many very small white blossoms; flowers are less than 1/8-inch across with white tepals becoming reddish-brown and have a prominent, slightly darker mid-rib; protruding stamens; green, funnel-shaped involucre with 5 lobes. Bloom Period: September to November.
