Description Habitat: Desert scrub environment; calcareous or gypsum-clay soils in rocky, gravelly areas in arroyos, flats and hillside; in the US, the plant is confined to the southern Big Bend area.
Plant: Woody bush 2 to 5 feet high with several main branches from base; newer stems (branchlets) armed with pairs of slender, whitish spines with maroon tips at leaf nodes.
Leaves: Bi-pinnate compound leaves up to 1 inch long inches long overall with usually 1 pair of pinnae, each with 3 to 5 pairs of small (3/16-inch long or less) linear leaflets per pinnae.
Inflorescence: Fragrant, bright yellow flowers in ball-shaped heads about 3/8 inch in diameter on peduncles about 3/4 tp 1-1/4 inches long.
Bloom Period: May to September.
