| Description | Habitat: Clay or clay-loam soils in dense thickets, and shrublands, Plant: Climbing or clambering perennial shrub, much-branched stems 6 to 12 ft. long. Leaves: Opposite, sessile, deltoid, 3/4 to 2 inches long, 5/8 to 1-5/8 inches wide with pointed tips (acute or acuminate); margins are toothed (coarsely-crenate or crenate-serrate) in the upper 2/3; on petioles are 1/5 to 3/4-inch long. Inflorescence: Small rounded clusters of composite flower heads at branch tips; heads about 3/8-inch long; no ray flowers; 20 to 50 blue to lavender disk florets per head, with long, thin, protruding bluish styles; bell-shaped or conical involucre with green to purplish-green phyllaries in 3 or 4 layers.
