Description Habitat: Various soils including rocky or loamy soil; wooded areas, thickets, pastures, stream banks, fencerows, roadsides, disturbed sites, etc.
Plant: Erect shrub up to 6 ft. tall; branches are leafy, erect or spreading with gray to grayish brown bark, becoming shredded; young twigs have short hairs, becoming smooth.
Leaves: Deciduous, opposite, oval to ovate or nearly orbicular, with wedge-shaped to rounded base, 0.4 to 1.8 inches long and 0.3 to 1.1 inches wide; on short petioles 0.1 to 0.2 inch long; margins are entire, upper surface bright to dark green, lower surface pale green with short hairs.
Inflorescence: Dense spikes in leaf axils with 8 to 20 small pinkish to greenish white flowers about 1/4-inch long; each flower with a bell-shaped corolla with 5 lobes, 5 stamens and a short green calyx with 5 teeth.
Bloom Period: April to July.
Fruit: Red to pink two-seeded drupes, nearly round to ellipsoid, about 1/4 inch long, smooth or with sparse appressed hairs.
