Description Habitat: Moist to somewhat dry soils in woods, fields, thickets, hedgerows, etc.
Plant: High-climbing perennial vine with hairless, woody, branching stems up to 20 ft long; stems have green prickles with dark tips; numerous tendrils.
Leaves: Alternate, shiny bright green leaves, usually ovate to broadly ovate with rounded point tips; blades are 1-1/2 to 6-1/2 inches long and about as wide on short petioles 1/2-inch or less long; leaves are both evergreen and deciduous.
Inflorescence: Dioecious flowers (male and female on separate plants) in umbels in leaf axils, each with 5 to 20 flowers; blossoms have 6 yellowish-green to bronze tepals 3 to 4 mm long and white anthers.
Bloom Period: March to June.
Fruit: Blue-black to black, round berries, 0.2 to 0.3 inches in diameter with dull surfaces.
