Description Habitat: Various soil types in thickets and scrublands along and near the Gulf Coast.
Plant: Woody, climbing vine with wiry, ribbed stems; branchlets covered with pubescent hairs.
Leaves: Alternate, bipinnately-compound leaves with soft, pubescent hairs; leaflets are ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 5/8 to 2 inches long and up to 1 inch wide (terminal leaflet being the largest); coarsely serrate margins; the edges of the rachis (the stem of the leaflets) are winged (having raised edges).
Inflorescence: Small panicles of small white flowers arising from leaf axils; each flower about 0.3-inch across with 5 petals, 8 stamens and conspicuous, flat nectaries between the stamens and the petal; 5 sepals. Helical tendril pairs arise from panicles.
Bloom Period: Fall, winter and spring.
Fruit: Seed pods with three wings, reddish, 3/8 to 1/2-inch long.
