Description | Habitat: Open areas in fields and along roadsides and disturbed areas. Plant: Erect, slender annual 4 to 24 inches tall; stems are simple or branched. Leaves: Narrow, opposite, 3/8 to 2-3/8 inches long, linear to oblong, lowermost oblanceolate; blade margins are rough with tiny, stiff hairs (scabrous). Inflorescence: Small (~3/8-inch across), pink flowers atop the stems; flowers have 5 spreading, notched petals with dark purple veins; beneath are broadly ovate, brownish bracts that enclose the corolla tube.
