| Description | Habitat: Moist soils in disturbed places, ditches, riverbanks, fields and shorelines. Plant: Erect annual 8 in. to nearly 6 ft. tall; stems are ascending to erect, rarely decumbent, much-branched, smooth and reddish, especially at nodes; brownish ocrea 0.25 to 0.8 inches long, usually with hairless edges and usually no bristles. Leaves: Alternate, oblong to nearly lanceolate with acute or obtuse tips, 2 to 5 inches long and 0.4 to 1-inch wide; smooth surfaces or the lower surface with small appressed hairs and punctate (dotted); short petioles 0.8 inches long or less. Inflorescence: Terminal or arising from axils, uninterrupted racemes 0.3 to 2.4 inches long with many small flowers; each flower about 1/4-inch across with 5 white to pink tepals, 6 to 8 stamens with whitish, pink or red anthers and 2 styles, stamens being either longer or shorter than styles (heterostyly) and either protruding or not and styles either protruding or not. Bloom Period: May to January.
