Description Habitat: Moist soils in coastal forests, along bogs, and in forested swamps.
Plant: Shrubby, evergreen tree 30 to 50 ft. tall with ascending branches; reddish brown, furrowed bark.
Leaves: Alternate, narrowly elliptic to widely ovate, 2-3/28 to 6-1/4 inches long and 3/4 to 2 inches wide; upper surfaces are green and shiney; lower surfaces on younger leaves have rusty brown, appressed hairs.
Inflorescence: Small, inconspicuous flowers about 1/8 to 1/4-inch long growing clusters from leaf axils; no petals; 6 sepals in two rows, pale creamy white to pale yellow; 9 pale yellow stamens.
Bloom Period: May and June.
Fruit: Small, round to oval, single seeded drupe about 3/8-inch across; hiny, dark blue to very deep purple; forming in the fall.
