Description | Habitat: Moist to muddy soils, often submerged and along streams. Plant: Perennial, often mat–forming and procumbent with ascending to erect, smooth, or nearly so, flowering shoots 6 to 25 inches tall; rooting at nodes. Leaves: Opposite leaves at nodes separated along shoots up to 3-1/2 inches; lower leaves short-petiolate becoming sessile above; oblong to orbicular blades 3/8 to 1-1/4 inches long with dentate to entire margins. Inflorescence: Solitary yellow flowers in upper leaf axils on pedicels 3/8 to 1-5/8 inches long; two-lipped corolla with two upper lobes and three lower; corolla 1/3 to 1/2 inch long, bright yellow, sometimes with reddish-brown dots; throated heavily bearded; 4 stamens (2 long and 2 short) and 2 stigmas; calyx bell-shaped with 5 unequal, rounded lobes.
