| Description | Habitat: Soils of floodplain deposits in the Rio Grande delta; in openings in woodlands and brushlands. Plant: Perennial with several weak, spreading, somewhat woody stems 8 to 20 inches long, branched; rooting from nodes. Leaves: Opposite blades are 1-3/8 to 4-1/2 inches long, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate to nearly linear at branch tips; narrowing at the bases becoming sessile; tips are acuminate; dark green upper surface, pale green lower. Inflorescence: Clusters of a few purple or reddish-purple flowers in upper leaf axils subtended by narrow bractlets 1/2-inch long; corollas are each about 1-inch long and two-lipped; upper lip narrows to two lobes or a notched tip; lower lobe has 3 broad lobes, center lobe with white stipes; 2 arching stamens; 5 narrow, pointed sepals. .
