| Description | Habitat: Sandy soils in depressions, wooded areas, along rivers, dunes and sandy bluffs. Plant: Erect perennial from horizontal rhizomes, 2 to 6 ft. tall; stems usually unbranched until near the inflorescence, slightly hairy or smooth. Leaves: Opposite stem leaves, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 2-3/8 to 6 inches long and 3/4 to 1-inch wide with acute to long acuminate tips; margins are entire or occasionally minutely and sharply toothed. Inflorescence: Dioecious (male and female flowers on separate plants); pyramid-shaped panicles at stem tips and sometimes from leaf axils, 2-3/4 to 12 inches long; pistillate inflorescences are densely-flowered, each flower subtended by woolly hairs; staminate inflorescences are more spreading, open; flowers are minute, cream to silver-white flowers 1/4-inch long; staminate flowers have 5 stamens.
