| Description | Habitat: Sunny areas with disturbed soils, along roadsides, in fields and woodland edges. Plant: Erect perennial 1-1/2 to 3 ft. tall with several to many stems, often branched, smooth, green to reddish, the upper portion sharply ridged below each leaf. Leaves: Opposite, oblong to linear, 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches long, less than 1/3-inch wide, sessile, surfaces are glandular-dotted; margins entire, rolling downward; tips pointed to rounded. Inflorescence: Terminal, dense clusters of leafy bracted yellow flowers 3/4 to 1 inch wide; 5 bright yellow to orangish petals with black-dotted margins, many stamens fused into 3 groups toward the base, 3 styles above the ovary; 5 linear-lanceolate, unequal sepals. Bloom Period: June to September. Fruit: Egg-shaped capsules up to 3/4-inch long.
