| Description | Habitat: Found in drier sandy or gravelly soils; prairies, plains, pastures, and roadsides. Plant: Biennial 12 to 36 inches tall; solitary stems, branching above, ribbed, smooth to canescent (dense, fine, grayish-white hairs). Leaves: Blades 2-1/2 to 6 inches long and 1/2 to 3 inches wide, becoming smaller upward, twice pinnately-divided, with linear lobes up to 1/4-inch wide, smooth or with woolly hairs (tomentose) or evenly tomentose or cansescent on both sides; basal leaves usually present; stem leaves alternate, at least 10 per stem. Inflorescence: Flowering heads in congested terminal compound corymbs, 30 to 100 heads per stem; each head with 30 to 70 yellow disk florets with corollas 1/10 to 1/8-inch long, no rays; involucre with 6 to 14 bracts 1/6 to 1/4 inch long.
