Description | Habitat: Calcareous or clay soils in prairies, roadsides and disturbed. Plant: Erect, stout annual 20 to 60 inches tall; mostly single stems, upper 4 to 8 inches branched terminating in flower heads; smooth stems and foliage; sticky to the touch. Leaves: Thick, stiff alternate and clasping leaves; oblong to obovate blades with coarsely-toothed edges; uppermost leaves clustered at the base of the flower heads like bracts. Inflorescence: A few to numerous showy flower heads clustered at the top of stems; each flower up to 1-3/4 inches across with 25 to 45 bright yellow rays and many more yellow disc florets; several rows of overlapping phyllaries with narrow-pointed tips curving outward. Bloom Period: August to October.
