Description Habitat: Various soil types in salt marshes, estuaries, lakeshores, stream­sides and disturbed sites; in Texas, only in the Rio Grande delta.
Plant: Twining, climbing perennial vine growing over the tops of adjacent bushes; sparsely covered with soft, fine hairs (pilose) to smooth, branching stems 10 to 30+ feet long; milky, sticky sap.
Leaves: Opposite, elliptic to oval with obtuse to shallowly cordate base, 3/4 to 2 inches long and 0.2 to 1 inch wide; tips acuminate to mucronate; surfaces are pilose or smooth; petioles up to 1/4-inch long.
Inflorescence: Seven to 15 flowers in umbels on peduncles 3/8 to 4-3/4 inches long; spreading corolla lobes are ovate, about 1/4-inch long and are cream to greenish cream; corona is encircled by maroon to reddish ring; calyx lobes are lanceolate to ovate and about 1/8-inch long; pedicels are 5/8 to 1-inch long.
Bloom Period: Year-round.
Fruit: Usually solitary, pilose-hairy, lance-shaped capsules, ~2 inches long and 3/8 to 5/8-inch wide with an attenuate tip.
