| Description | Habitat: Various soils; grasslands, flats, hillsides, disturbed sites, roadsides, displacing native species; 3,000 to 4,500 ft. Plant: Tufted perennial; culms erect or ascending, geniculate (bent like a knee) and rooting at lower nodes, 17 to 31 inches tall. Foliage: Leaf blades 1 inch to 4-3/4 inches long, 1 to 3 mm wide, with flat to involute (rolled up) edges; open sheaths 1/3 to 1/2 the distance between noded, smooth except for sparse short hairs at the tips. Inflorescence: Open panicles 2-3/4 to 7 inches long and 3/4 to 3 inches wide with ascending to slightly spreading branches; spikelets are linear, dark gray-green to straw colored, several to 12-flowered; small, pointed glumes about 1.5 mm long.
