| Description | Habitat: Moist sandy or calcareous soils in disturbed areas; in Texas, in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and coastal areas. Plant: Perennial with erect or ascending stems up to 40 inches tall; stems are more or less hexagonal in cross-section and covered with short, pubescent hairs. Leaves: Opposite leaves; lower leaves are oblong-lanceolate or oblong up to 2 inches long and 3/4-inch wide and on petioles 3/8 to 5/8-inch long; upper stem leaves are smaller and sessile; surfaces are covered with pubescent hairs. Inflorescence: Bright red flowers in terminal spikes or from leaf axils, usually one blooming at a time, flower has a curved, tubular 2-lipped corolla 1.1 inches long; 2 stamens with yellow anthers barely visible just below the upper lip; lower lip reflexed; outer surfaces covered with short, pubescent hairs; greenish hyaline calyx about 1/4-inch long, lobes with pointed tips.
