Description Habitat: Moister soils in meadows, woodlands, creek bottoms and along streams.
Plant: Perennial grass from spreading rhizomes, tuft or mat-forming; single rising culms (stems) 20 to 50 inches tall, usually unbranched, light green and hairless.
Foliage: Several alternate, linear-lanceolate leaves along the length of the culm, 4 to 8 inches long and 1/3 to 2/3-inch wide, light to medium green, flat, and hairless; leaf sheaths are light green, hairless or minutely pubescent.
Inflorescence: Open, very lax panicles 3 to 14 (up to 20) inches long, with nodding branches; each branch with 2 to 6 large, flat spikelets 1 to 1-3/4 inches long with 12 to 18 florets each.
Bloom Period: Summer and fall.
