Description |
Habitat Dry streambeds and rocky slopes in desert and semi-desert areas of far West Texas and southern New Mexico. Plant: Perennial shrub 2 to 4 ft. tall; stems are much-branched; younger stems are pubescent, gland-dotted and have deciduous bark; older stems are usually leafless. Leaves: Alternate, oblong to broadly ovate blades 1/4 to 5/8-inch long and up to 1/3-inch wide; petioles less than 0.2-inch long; margins are irregularly toothed or cleft and the tips are acute to obtuse, surfaces are sparsely pubescent and gland-dotted. Inflorescence: Composite flower heads in leafy, elongated panicles with heads about twice as long as wide; no ray flowers; 8–14 disk florets with pale yellow-green, often purple-tinged corollas less than 1/4-inch long; involucre is cylindrical, 1/4 to 1/3-inch long with 15 to 25 gland-dotted phyllaries in several layers.
