Description | Habitat: Wet soils in muddy low areas, marshes, along ditches, ponds and along roadsides, etc. Plant: Stout, erect annual 8 to 40 inches tall, much-branched in lower portion. Leaves: Blades are opposite, usually lanceolate to linear-oblong, 3/4 to 3-1/8 inches long and up to 5/8-inch wide; bases are cordate and clasping; edges are entire and tips are pointed; blades have a conspicuous mid-vein. Inflorescence: Tight clusters of 2 to 5 pink to purple blossoms at the mid-stem leaf axils; each flower about 1/4-inch wide with 4 (or 5) petals; 4 (or more) stamens with dark yellow anthers; protruding style. Bloom Period: April to November. Fruit: Round capsules less than 1/5 in diameter.
