| Description | Habitat: Loamy soils in the Rio Grande delta in subtropical woodlands and brushlands. Plant: Tall relatively narrow shrub 3 to 15 ft. high; un-armed, usually ascending branches with gray to brown bark, few secondary branches; wart-like feature at leaf nodes . Leaves: Alternate or in clusters, spatulate or linear-spatulate, 3/4 to 1-1/4 inches long; sessile; tips are rounded or sometimes with a notch; margins are entire; surfaces are smooth, green or pale-green. Inflorescence: Small (~1/4-inch across), inconspicuous, usually single flowers in leaf axils or in small clusters; male and female flowers on separate plants; each flower with 5 +/- pointed, hairy sepals and no petals; staminate flowers have 14 to 17 protruding stamens with yellow anthers; pistillate flowers with 3 styles.
