Description | Habitat: Dryer soils in fields, prairies, forests, and disturbed areas; usually considered a weed, widespread in eastern half of Texas and to the north and east. Plant: Upright or reclining annual with slender weak stems, branched from lower portion; up to 40 inches tall. Leaves: Stem leaves are small, 1/4 to 3/4-inch long, and about as wide or wider as long, and clasping, rounded to ovate with rounded or pointed tips; edges crenate to serrate. Inflorescence: One or more flowers arising from leaf nodes; lower ones are cleistogamous (closed and self-pollinating) and very small, dropping early; upper blossoms with 5 blue petals, up to 3/4-inch across with very prominent stigma surrounded by shorter stamens.
