Description Habitat: Various soil types in fields, disturbed areas and along roadsides; the images below were taken of a solitary plant atop Enchanted Rock.
Plant: Single-stemmed, erect leafy annual, 12 to 20 inches tall.
Leaves: Narrow, opposite, clasping, lanceolate leaves 2 to 3-1/2 inches long; margins are coarsely toothed.
Inflorescence: Dense terminal raceme of two-lipped blossoms; white lower lip divided into three spreading lobes; upper lip is hoodlike, smaller and usually pinkish; leaf-like bract beneath each flower.
Bloom Period: April and May.
