Description | Habitat: Sandy or loam soils in open sites, occasionally marshy ground, old fields, woodlands, meadows, and pastures. Plant: Erect, ascending, or sprawling perennial, with 1 to 5 (or more) straight, brittle stems 12 to 40 inches long; numerous and long branches in the inflorescence. Leaves: Alternate, lower stem leaves, usually withered by flowering, are oblanceolate to spatulate, 1/3 to 2 inches long, 1/8 to 5/8-inch wide, smooth and sessile with a single central prominent vein; smaller leaves in clusters at axils. Inflorescence: Open panicle about 6 to 9 inches long with numerous white composite flowerheads, each about 1/2-inch across with 15 to 30 white to bluish rays and about the same number of yellow disk florets, turning reddish-purple with age; involucres are cylindrical to bell-shaped and usually ~1/4-inch long with appressed or slightly spreading phyllaries, in layers of 4 to 6; outer phyllaries are oblong-oblanceolate and light green with dark green tips.
