Description Habitat: Calcareous (limestone) soils in open rocky places, prairies and dry woods.
Plant: Perennial with 1 to 3 erect to ascending, rough stems 12 to 28+ inches tall.
Leaves: Alternate stem leaves; lower stem leaves are oblanceolate to ovate, up to 3-1/8 inches long and almost 1 inch wide; upper leaves becoming elliptic to ovate-elliptic, 1/2 inch long and 1/4-inch wide; edges are entire to low-serrate above midblade; blades taper to long-winged petioles; surfaces are rough (scabrous).
Inflorescence: Many (20 to over 200) small, yellow, composite flower heads in terminal, compact, panicle-like arrays; each head less than about 1/2-inch across with 4 to 7 rays and 4 to 6 disk florets in the center.
Bloom Period: August to October.
