Description Habitat: Woodlands, thickets, meadows, and along streams.
Plant: Mostly erect perennial, leafy stems with a few branches in the upper portion; stems are slightly hairy; 1 to 3-1/2 ft. tall.
Leaves: Compound basal leaves with 3 to 5 (rarely 7) rhombic leaflets on long petioles with serrate edges; the end leaflet is the largest, up to 4 inches long and 3 inches across, often lobed in 2 or 3 parts in the lower plant; lateral leaflets are variable in shape but mostly ovate to rhombic; lower stem leaves are similar to basal leaves but on short petioles or sessile; upper stem leaves mostly ternately compound or cleft, becoming smaller and shorter stalked upward eventually becoming simple near the flowers.
Inforescence: Clusters of up to 3 long-stalked flowers at the top of the stem and arising from upper leaf axils; flowers are 1/2-inch wide with 5 white rounded petals, alternating with 5 pointed green sepals, numerous stamens with cream-colored anthers surround the dome-shaped center that is covered with numerous thick green styles.
Bloom Period: April to June.
