Description |
Habitat: Dry, rocky limestone ground, open or thinly wooded hills, prairies; often found among grasses. Plant: Perennial. Bushy clump of leaves with a few to several erect flower-bearing, somewhat hairy stems; overall 6 to 18 inches tall. Leaves: Stem leaves opposite, linear-lanceolate, 1 to 2 inches long. Inflorescence: Racemes 3 to 6 inches long with a few yellow to yellow-orange blossoms, becoming red with age, about 5/8-inch across; 5 petals, triangular-ovate in shape, very narrow at base, with prominent central rib and crinkly edges; 5 green sepals extending forward between petals then curving back, bearded at tip; prominent stamens.
