Description Habitat: Calcareous to sandy soils in prairies and open areas, roadsides.
Plant: Clump-forming erect perennial 8 to 32 inches tall; no stems; flowerheads atop long, leafless peduncles.
Leaves: Basal leaves in a rosette, blades 2 to 6 inches long, spatulate to oblanceolate; edges smooth, slightly toothed or pinnatifid; surfaces smooth with a few isolated hairs.
Inflorescence: Single composite nearly spherical flower heads up to 1.2 inches across atop long peduncles arising from plant base; generally no ray flowers; 40 to 100+ disk florets, corollas pinkish to reddish-purple.
Blooming Period: March to June.
