Description Habitat: Sandy or gravelly soils in grasslands, woodlands, roadsides and disturbed areas; 300 to 6200 ft.
Plant: Erect biennial or annual, 2 to 6 feet tall; usually solitary, leafy, stems branching only in the inflorescence and with dense, woolly hairs.
Leaves: Basal leaves usually withered before flowering; stem leaves are in the lower 3/4 portion, alternate, oblong to oblanceolate blades, 3/8 to 2-3/4 inches long and 1/8 to 5/8-inch wide; on short petioles, less than 1/4-inch long; both surfaces densely hairy, the lower moreso.
Inflorescence: Large open cymes or umbels located at the top of the stem with tight clusters of several white to pink flowers in a cup-shaped, densely hairy involucre; each individual flower is less than 1/8-inch long, with 6 petal-like tepals.
Bloom Period: September to November.
