Description Habitat: Wet soils in pastures, marshy areas, roadside ditches and disturbed areas.
Plant: Tufted, leafy perennial with hairless, three-sided culms (stems) usually 24 to 28 inches long, rough to the touch (scabrid) along the angle ridges.
Leaves: Four to 12 linear basal leaves almost as long as the culms, flat to V-shaped, with readily visible cross ribs especially on lower surfaces.
Inflorescence: Nearly spherical, congested heads consisting of many (16 to 40) oblong spikelets, each head atop one of several (6 to 14) primary or secondary peduncles; each flat spikelet 1/4 to 1/2-inch long and less than 1/8-inch wide with 10 to 40 tiny, light green floral scales, becoming brownish when mature; peduncles arise from axils of 4 to 8 leaf-like, lateral or ascending, V-shaped bracts that are up to 20 inches long and 1/2-inch wide.
