Description | Habitat: Coastal salt marsh and brackish backwaters and inland areas with poor drainage and salt accumulations; at or near sea level; extremely abundant. Plant: Perennial subshrub 16 to 32 inches tall; stems are much-branched, usually erect but sometimes decumbent or arching. Leaves: Opposite, grayish-green leaves, crowded on stems, obovate to oblanceolate or spatulate, 3/4 to 2-3/8 inches inches long, sessile or with a narrow petiole-like bases; thick and fleshy with entire margins that may be dentate or serrate near the bases. Inflorescence: Solitary, composite heads on peduncles about an inch or less long, each head 1 to 1-3/8 inches across and with 15 to 30 yellow rays notched at tips and 20 to 75 dull yellow to brownish-yellow disk florets in the center with conspicuous dark brown anthers; phyllaries below the head are in layers of 3 to 4, the outer shorter than the inner and all with small spines on the tips.
