Description | Habitat: Limestone soils in open areas, grasslands and flats; 2800 to 4400 ft. Plant: Very low-growing straggly perennial, up to 5 inches tall; stems are much branched. Leaves: Linear, opposite, sessile blades crowded along the stems; 0.6 to 1.2 inches long and about 1/8-inch wide+/-; surfaces covered with short stiff hairs. Inflorescence: Composite flower heads on the branch tips, with none or 5 to 8 roundish to ovate yellow, orange or purplish rays less than 0.25-inch long and 18 to 24 red-orange disk florets; cylindrical involucre with oblong phyllaries, green with dark bands. Bloom Period: Spring to fall.
