Description Habitat: Rocky, limestone soils in open areas, grasslands and brushlands.
Plant: Upright perennial with several clump-forming woolly stems 8 to 32 inches tall, branching in the upper portions.
Leaves: Numerous crowded narrow linear leaves, 2 to 3-1/8 inches long; sessile; upper surfaces smooth or slightly woolly-hairy (tomentose), lower surfaces densely woolly-hairy.
Inflorescence: Clusters of several to many composite flower heads in corymbs, each head about 1/2-inch high with no rays and 20 to 60 purple disc florets; involucres with 40 to 50+ phyllaries in several layers densely covered with woolly hairs.
