Description | Habitat: Sandy soils and prairies. Plant: Low growing perennial with a woody crown and taproot with several stout stems 24 to 27 inches long, usually reclining but never stiffly erect. Leaves: Alternate main leaves 3.2 to 8.6 inches long divided into 13 to 25 linear-oblanceolate leaflets 0.7 to 2 inches long and 0.15 to 0.6 inches wide; ciliate margins; hairy petioles and rachis. Inflorescence: Terminal, uncrowded racemes 4 to 12 inches long with 5-petal pea-like flowers 0.6 to 0.8 inches long; upright, wide-spreading banner; when first opened blossoms are white, turning a rosy pink shortly before closing and then red.
