Description | Habitat: Dry, rocky, sandy, gravelly, or shaly soils; limestone soils; in prairies, pastures, open wooded areas and roadsides Plant: A bushy, compact, low-growing and colony-forming perennial 4 to 32 inches tall; multiple spreading or erect stems with light to dark brown surfaces, lower portions smooth, upper becoming glandular-hairy. Leaves: Lower and middle stem leaves are alternate, oblong and slightly clasping, up to 2 inches long, with hairy upper surfaces and rough glandular-hairy lower; upper stem leaves are alternate, lanceolate to oblong and sessile less than 3/8-inch long with moderately hairy to densely glandular surfaces. Inflorescence: Composite flower heads in open, diffuse arrays each 1 to 1-1/4 inches across, with 20 to 35 purple-blue ray florets and 30 to 40 yellow disk florets; bell-shaped involucre with 4 or 5 layers of pointed and recurved phyllaries with faces that are moderately hairy or glandular-hairy; spreading, leaf-like bracts subtend each head, linear to narrowly oblong, less than 1/3-inch long and grading into phyllaries.
