Description | Habitat: Dry, rocky soils on limestone flats, ledges and hills, and along canyons and dry washes. Plant: Low-growing, many-branched shrub up to 16 inches tall; green stems turning white and grey with age. Leaves: Spatulate to obovate or lancelate to oblancelate leaves 3/8 to 3/4-inch long and up to 1/2-inch wide; on petioles 1/4 to 1/3 as long as the blades; edges have bristly hairs; surfaces covered with short hairs. Inflorescence: Purple to pale lavender funnel-shaped blossoms growing from leaf axils, subtended by leaf-like bractlets 1/3 to 5/8-inch long; flowers up to 1-1/2 inches long have a tubular corolla with 5 flaring lobes with purplish-red longitudinal lines and irregular edges.
