Description Habitat: Sandy, moist soils in open woods and woodland margins, prairies, and roadsides.
Plant: Ascending to erect annual, unbranched or several-branched at the base and above, up to 18 inches tall; hairy stems and foliage.
Leaves: Alternate; basal leaves elliptic to oblong overall and pinnately-divided or deeply lobed with 5 to 9 lobes, 3/4-inch to 1-1/4 inches long, usually withering by flowering time; stem leaves are usually 5 or 7-lobed, usually clasping or on short petioles or sessile, the blade about 3/4-inch long becoming smaller toward the stem tip.
Inflorescence: Small bell-shaped blossoms grouped together in coiled (scorpioid) clusters that become more apparent during the season; each corolla 0.4-inch across with 5 overlapping blue to purplish lobes often with a pale lower portion, sometimes with dark spots; margins of corolla lobes are entire or minutely toothed or scalloped; protruding stamens; stalks, calyces and outer corolla surfaces have fine hairs.
Bloom Period: March to May.
