Description Habitat: Sandy soils in woodland margins and prairies.
Plant: Ascending to erect annual with slender stems 2 to 16 inches tall; smooth stems and leaves.
Leaves: Alternate stem leaves, oblong to oval in outline and once or twice pinnately-divided 2 to 4 pairs of lobes, 0.6-inch to 1.6 inches long and up to 0.5-inch wide.
Inflorescence: Small bell-shaped blossoms grouped together in coiled (scorpioid) clusters that become more apparent during the season; each corolla up to 0.5-inch across with 5 overlapping blue to purplish lobes often with a pale lower portion, sometimes with dark spots; margins of corolla lobes are entire; protruding stamens with blue anthers; calyx lobe surfaces have fine hairs.
Bloom Period: March to May.
