Description | Habitat: Limestone soils on prairies and rocky areas, and sandy soils in open woods. Plant: Erect, showy perennial 1 to 2-1/2 feet tall, single or multi-stemmed; covered with fine, dense pubescent hairs. Leaves: Shiny ovate to obovate, 2 to 3-1/2 inches long, with sharply-toothed edges; lower leaves with petioles, mid and upper leaves with small hairs and sessile. Inflorescence: White to light or deep lavender blossoms; corolla tube 1-1/2 to 2 inches long with two lips; upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed, lobes rounded and flaring; smooth inside with fine pubescent hairs outside; corolla throat has prominent purple-ish lines; 5 stamens (one unfertile staminode bearded with golden-yellow hairs). Bloom Period: April and May.
