Description Habitat: Moist sandy or gravelly soils in open, flat woodlands, floodplains, ditches and other disturbed areas; also in water in swamps and marshes.
Plant: Terrestrial and aquatic perennial with smooth, prostrate, creeping or floating stems with erect to ascending shoots supporting leaves and flowers, up to 10 inches tall.
Leaves: Alternate and umbrella-like (orbicular-peltate) leaves, 1/2 to 2-1/2 inches across with crenate or crenately-lobed margins; on petioles 5 to 10 inches long.
Inflorescence: A few to many small flowers in simple umbels on long peduncles; flowers are less than 1/4-inch across with no sepals, 5 white petals, 5 stamens; greenish ovary in center has two segments and 2 pale green styles.
Bloom Period: April to October.
