Description | Habitat: Sandy soils, open areas; prairies, hillsides. Ubiquitous in the Hill Country. Plant: Bushy annual 1 to 2 feet tall. Leaves: Linear, oblong, or spatulate leaves 1 to 3-1/2 inches long, with lobed, toothed or smooth edges. Inflorescence: Composite flower heads 1-1/4 to 2 inches across; 8 to 14 brightly-colored yellow-tipped red rays, rarely all yellow; tips 3-lobed; 40 to 100+ yellow-to-deep red disk florets, corollas often bicolored; involucre with 18 to 28+ phyllaries.
