Leaves: Alternate, linear or linear-lanceolate stem leaves; both surfaces covered with short, matted, woolly hairs; edges often upturned; upper leaves may be deeply cleft into three lobes. Inflorescence: Dense, elongated spike beginning with red bracts above the leaves, wider and more oblanceolate in shape, usually with a pair of lobes at the base and long white hairs on their lower sides; flowers are tubular, tapering towards the tip, from where the style and stigma slightly protrude; greenish-yellow corolla is about 1-1/2 inches long and more than half is enclosed by the red, lobed calyx, similar in appearance to the bracts.
