| Description | Habitat: Moist areas in woods, meadows, thickets, fields, roadsides, railroads, streamsides, ponds, sloughs. Plant: Erect, branched annual 20 to 48 inches tall, smooth stems. Leaves: Opposite on petioles 3/8 to 1-3/4 inches long; blades pinnately-compound with 3 to 5 leaflets, each 3/4 to 3-1/8 inches long, lanceolate with serrate margins; the terminal leaflet on a slender stalk (petiolule). Inflorescence: Usually solitary, composite flower heads about 3/8 to 1/2-inch across on peduncles 1-3/4 to 4 inches long; 5 to 8 linear outer phyllaries or bracts, 3/8 to 2 inches long with ciliate margins; 6 to 12 ovate inner bractlets less than 1/4-inch long in a ring wrapped around the flower heads; ray flowers usually lacking but 1 to 3+ golden rays may be present, ~1/8-inch or less long; 20 to 60 disk florets with orange corollas.
