| Description | Habitat: Sandy desert washes and floodplains; 1,000 to 4,000 ft. Plant: Broom-like perennial shrub, densely branched mostly above; older stems whitish to light beige; new stems light green; 2 to 6 feet tall. Leaves: Alternate, linear or filiform, dark green, 3/4 to 2-3/4 inches long; young leaves may be pinnately divided into several segments. Inflorescence: Clusters of flower heads borne along stems and arising from leaf axils; staminate heads more numerous than pistillate, both present in same cluster; both flowers are rayless; staminate heads have 5 to 7 flowers; pistllate heads are single-flowered with 9 to 12 spreading outer phyllaries forming a saucer shape.
