Description Roadsides and open hillsides; stout, branched, leafy biennial or perennial up to 40 inches tall; leaves sessile (upper) or short-petioled (lower), crowded on stems, lanceolate or oblong, larger ones 2-1/2 to 6 inches long, toothed edges; large (about 4 inches across), showy white flowers opening after noon, each with five green sepals and ten petals, 100 to 200 stamens topped by small yellowish anthers in center; blooming July to September.
