Description Habitat: Gravelly, calcareous soils in abandoned pastures, hillsides, gravel bars.
Plant: Erect, branched annual 1 to 2-1/2 feet tall.
Leaves: Narrow, 1/4-inch wide lanceolate leaves 1 to 2 inches long covered with minute hairs.
Inflorescence: Light to dark pink or purple flower heads 5/8-inch across, 7-12 disk flowers with 5 deep lobes; no ray flowers.

Description Habitat: Dry, sandy soils in disturbed areas, pastures, prairies, woodland openings.
Plant: Erect, stout, hairy annual 2 to4 feet tall, upper portion branched.
Leaves: Broadly to narrowly lanceolate alternate leaves 1 to 2-3/4 inches long on short petioles.
Inflorescence: Light to dark pink or purple flower heads 5/8-inch across, 7-12 disk flowers with 5 deep lobes; no ray flowers.
